Make Your Resume Stand Out

Let us help you build the best resume. Here are some simple dos and don'ts when writing a resume that will make you stand out.

Spelling and Grammer

The #1, #2, and #3 thing you will hear and need to remember is to proof your resume. Spelling counts. Spell Check won't catch everything. Did you read your resume? Make sure you and someone else reads your resume before your interview or posting it online.

Contact Information

It's time to be an adult, ditch the silly email and get one that is more professional. It's best to avoid the free emails like hotmail or yahoo, but if this is something you can't avoid Gmail is a great email service. Make it your name, first initial last name, something that doesn't have the words sexy, freak, or cuttiepie. Include your phone number and address as well. Often times, if your resume is missing one of these pieces it will just go into a pile. No hiring manager wants to have to work to get a hold of you or guess what city you live in.

Formatting

Do not clutter your resume with difficult to read fonts, pictures and formatting. Keep it simple with a chronological approach and use bullets points it makes your information precise and easy to read. If you are not sure what a resume should look like, go online and find a simple template to structure your's after. Best results are achieved with a one or two page resume that is applicable to the position you are applying for.

What NOT to Include

  • Keep it professional: It is not necessary to include personal information such as age, health, marital status or number of childern.

If you have been in the work force for several years hiring managers and recruiters generally look back at your last ten years of work, so it isn't nessary to inlcude your first job at the age of 16 from 20 years ago. An exception would be if previous work experience pertains to the position you are interested in now.

Most Recent Job First

Start your resume with a clear, concise objective and then move on to your current position or most recent job.

Awards and Achievements

Highlight your skills, awards, accomplishments, cold-calls, percent to quota, large accounts, success stories, etc. at the top of your resume. Don't be afraid to brag about your accomplishments in your sales career! This is your chance to prove you're a step above the rest! For example, "grew business from $500k to 1,000,000 in 2006". "Achieved 110% to quota."

What NOT to Say

Don’t over stuff your resume with meaningless wording. Phrases like “Self-motivated, hands-on team player with a proven track record, energetic sales person, very excitable and outgoing, etc.” are not necessary, nor do they reflect accomplishments and show your career advancements.

Fact OR Fiction

Resumes do not get you jobs, but do lead to interviews. Remember, everything you put on your resume is fair game and proof of an accomplishment might be required. If you cannot document it or back it up, be careful in including it on your resume.
